First Day Kindergarten, John Marshall Elementary. Mrs. Bottomley was possibly the best kindergarten teacher ever. She was not a young woman. She was of a different era. She came to school every day in stockings, heels and a sailor themed dress. It was the songs, the artwork, the reading, the playing under the pecan trees that, Mrs. Bottomley's fancy ways that made me fall in love with school.

Mrs. Lidtke was the most influential teacher that I ever had. She was the first adult that I ever saw cry. It was when she was reading Where the Red Fern Grows. That is when I connected the dots and realized the impact that literature has. She was my teacher and school librarian for 7 years. I was the library aide for most of those years. She introduced me to Wilson Rawls, author of Where the Red Fern Grows. They grew up together in the Ozarks and remained friends.
